TORONTO — Nearly halfway through Wyatt Johnston’s NHL trial run, the Stars know a decision looms on the horizon. They also know they have at least nine more...
Johnston’s inclusion on the opening night roster exiting training camp was not a surprise. Given his 124-point performance in the OHL last season, and his propensity to play a two-way game, his name was penciled into the roster over the summer. If the Stars were going to keep one teenager on the roster, Johnston was the favorite over Kamloops product Logan Stankoven.
Giving Johnston the nine-game tryout was the easy part, especially since Johnston’s entry-level contract helps the Stars navigate a crowded salary cap situation. Now, they have five more games to decide where Johnston plays the remainder of this season.He’s already been named the most outstanding player in the league. He’s already won a scoring title. Unlike Stankoven, he doesn’t play for his hometown team. Unlike Stankoven, he isn’t hosting the Memorial Cup this season.
The second period featured some tough sequences for Johnston, as he allowed William Nylander to skate around him at 4 on 4 to set up a one-timer in the opposite circle. He also turned the puck over to set up Nick Robertson’s slap shot, and later on that shift took a holding penalty trying to corral John Tavares.
