Employees at a Starbucks in Whitehall Township could form the company’s second union in the Lehigh Valley Friday.
Employees at the MacArthur Road Starbucks launched their petition for a union on Oct. 31, according to Bailey Muhl, a member of the store’s union organizing committee.
“It started with just two of us talking about the national effort and then snowballed when we all realized we had the same frustrations,” Muhl said. “It’s not livable right now, there’s a lot of baristas who live paycheck to paycheck, need federal assistance, have a second job or live with their parents. It’s not a sustainable career right now,” she said.
Starbucks employees have unionized at a record pace. The company that had no unions around this time last year, now has more than 250, according to, a website providing information about elections governed by the National Labor Relations Board.
