Despite Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s attempt at retconning Rey’s lineage, Rey “no one” was still far better than Rey Palpatine. The main character in the Star Wars sequels, Rey was introduced as one of Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ many mystery boxes. The second teaser for The Force Awakens hinted at some sort of Skywalker lineage, as it used Luke’s “the Force is strong in my family” line from Return of the Jedi.
The Last Jedi simply revealed that Rey was a "nobody" – perhaps the most shocking and least expected outcome for the Rey lineage debate. It was a perfect twist in the character’s story, a desperate heroine who had been abandoned by her likely dad parents on Jakku. The divisive The Last Jedi was about the meaning of words like “hero” and “legend,” and the idea was that Rey did not need to come from a powerful family to be the hero.
Palpatine's Reveal Undermined Rey's "No One" Message More than a shocking twist created just to subvert expectations, the Rey “no one” reveal encapsulated The Last Jedi’s perfect message – anyone could be the hero of their own story. Luke Skywalker was a legend, the greatest Jedi Master the galaxy had seen in decades years, yet he was also flawed. Rey’s legacy didn't need to be defined by Luke or Leia, which would leave her free to start her own story.
