Stanford gets quick strike from Smith, start 2022 with win over Colgate
STANFORD – On Stanford’s first play from scrimmage this season, E.J. Smith took a handoff, cut back to the left and ran upfield 87 yards for a touchdown, tied for the fifth-longest scoring run in program history.
A redshirt sophomore making his first start after Stanford’s top two running backs transferred, Smith finished with 118 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Tanner McKee, the Cardinal’s second-year starter, completed 22 of 27 pass attempts for 308 yards and two touchdowns to senior Michael Wilson, who had five catches for 82 yards.
Still, Shaw was proud of his team’s resiliency. Wilson bounced back after dropping his first target, Filkins scored a touchdown, linebacker Stephen Herron recorded a 10-yard sack after missing a sack earlier, and linebacker Levani Damuni dropped a potential pick-6 but finished with a game-high 10 tackles.
