Interim President Ranil Wickremesinghe declares a state of emergency in Sri Lanka as the protest movement completes 100 days and the economic crisis continues

Sri Lanka's protest movement has completed its 100 days, having forced one president from office and now turning its sights on his successor. A government notice early on Monday announced the emergency in the crisis-hit South Asian country, where the parliament is meeting on Tuesday to accept nominations for the post of the president.

Wickremesinghe is one of the top contenders to take on the role full-time but protesters also want him gone, leading to the prospect of further unrest should he be elected. The potential dark horse is senior ruling party lawmaker Dullas Alahapperuma.
