Southlake Carroll invites suspicion by weakening nondiscrimination statement | Opinion

Carroll ISD’s student code of conduct displays a statement on its cover that reminds families the district doesn’t discriminate “on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or age” in educating children.
The explanation offered was a flimsy one. School board members pointed to the recommendation of a policy committee that included community members. Fred Stovall, the committee chair and a former trustee, told the board that a majority of the committee members didn’t feel comfortable going beyond the protected classes covered by the U.S. Department of Education’s civil rights division.
“There may need to be recommendations with respect to board policies as well, to the extent that they are not congruent with the new code of conduct,” he told the board.
