Southeast Alaska sees closure of crab seasons
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Dungeness crab season in Southeast Alaska closed at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30 and the closure of the Golden King crab season is Dec. 1.
According to Messmer, crab populations in the Southeast region, have been stable and are often cyclic. For the Dungeness crab, the populations increases and decreases about every 5 years. In 2021, Southeast Alaska had a larger than normal harvest of Dungeness crab, but this year’s harvest has been smaller than normal. Compared to the Bering Sea harvest the Southeast harvest tends to be smaller. “Our Dungeness... average about three million pounds a year,” said Messmer.
