The law signed by Gov. Henry McMaster (R) would require students in public schools and colleges to compete with the “biological sex” listed on their birth certificates.

But just before the Republican-dominated General Assembly passed the proposal earlier this month, McMaster said “I think the girls ought to play girls and the boys ought to play boys. That’s the way we’ve always done it.”
