She’s headed toward a few girls at the end of the hall who are about to walk into Ms. Maria Michelmann’s kindergarten classroom. Just before she reaches them, Sophia turns around and yells back to me, “Come on, Miss Hannah! Run club is just finishing up!”and The Plain Dealer spent a year embedded with Sophia’s class for a special project called Cleveland’s Promise, documenting life inside a Cleveland classroom and the many challenges of educating children growing up in poverty.
Almira is one of about a dozen schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District that participate in the. Each year, Ms. Michelmann has seen students blossom through their running journeys. Some students join for the sense of community and the chance to connect with friends. For others, the benefit and need go deeper than that.
“It’s an exercise that’s mostly mental, so it teaches perseverance and will, things that help you deal with your trauma,” Ms. Michelmann says. “Races have challenges, but you learn you have the strength to overcome them – and you have the strength to deal with the other things that happen in your life, too. The kids learn that they’re survivors, who can get through anything.”
