Son charged in mother's Pacific Beach slaying released from jail; another suspect emerges [Breaking]
A man charged in his mother’s shooting death in Pacific Beach last month has been released from jail, and another suspect has emerged, San Diego police said Friday.
Campbell declined to say what new evidence turned their attention to Villegas and cleared the son of Mary Garcia, a 65-year-old resident of Pacific Beach. He said investigators are working to determine the motive behind the killing, and to determine whether or how she may have known Villegas.A group of people found Garcia on the sand near Reed Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, south of Crystal Pier, around 12:30 a.m. Sept. 13. They realized she was hurt and called 911.
Less than 12 hours later, Garcia’s 27-year-old son was found and arrested. He was charged in San Diego Superior Court. “Detectives immediately contacted the District Attorney’s Office regarding the information gathered and all charges against him were dismissed,” Campbell said.Campbell said that newly developed information pointed investigators to Villegas, a 27-year-old Pacific Beach resident. The homicide lieutenant said Villegas left San Diego after the shooting and drove to Texas.
