Texas’ defensive front kept Alabama’s Bryce Young off his rhythm for most of Saturday. After the 20-19 final, Sarkisian said that “in a weird way” his Longhorns feel pretty good about themselves. As fans left the stadium, there were no shouts of anger, no tears. Until the final three drives, Texas defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski’s unit got the better of former Texans coach Bill O’Brien’s group. Texas just didn’t take advantage, settling for field goals instead of scoring touchdowns. Auburn’s miss of a 20-yarder on the final play of the first half left the score tied at the break.
