Yay! The Midsummer Mozart Festival is back for another summer, with concerts this month in Berkeley, San Francisco, the wine country and the South Bay.
The festival was founded in 1974 by one of the world’s foremost Mozart interpreters, the late Maestro George Cleve, when he and his friends were kicking back with a few beers one night after rehearsing Mozart’s delightful opera “The Abduction from the Seraglio.” Let’s face it: Music is the king of the arts . Don’t get me wrong: I love words. They’re my stock in trade. And I love the visual arts, from medieval to modern times.
And the greatest music of all — and by “greatest,” I mean the most fun — is Mozart’s. It’s so good, you don’t have to know anything about music to be instantly captivated. Take me, for instance: I’m just an old rock ‘n’ roller. But not even Elvis singing “Mystery Train,” Little Richard singing “Lucille” or Jerry Lee Lewis singing “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” can match Mozart. The dude has chops!
