SMU Mustangs logo.SMU safeties coach and special teams coordinator Craig Naivar is expected to become the next defensive coordinator at Coastal Carolina, an SMU official with knowledge of the situation confirmed withNaivar joined SMU in December 2021 and has nearly 30 years of experience. He was previously the safeties coach at USC for two years and helped Talanoa Hufanga to a consensus First-Team All-America honor in 2020. Naivar was also the safeties coach at Texas from 2017 to 2019.
SMU finished the season with a 7-6 record after a 24-23 to BYU Saturday. The 9-3 Coastal Carolina team will play East Carolina in the TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 27.
