An unsual weather pattern has triggered the fires and also channeled the smoke into places including central Pennsylvania.

Photo credit: PennLiveVisibility in central Pennsylvania is significantly impacted by smoke on Wednesday, reducing visibility to a mile or even less — levels that could problems for airplanes trying to land.

“In the absence of that it would be a nice, blue, sunny day,” says Aaron Tyburski, a National Weather Service meteorologist. Instead, the smoke from Canadian wildfires has reduced visibility to as little as a half-mile in parts of central Pennsylvania and central New York, posing potential problems for aircraft and even motorists, who might encounter conditions similar to fog, according to Tyburski. They result from unusual weather conditions that make it ripe for fires and which also channeled the smoke over Pennsylvania and even areas further south, Tyburki explains.

The culprit is a low-pressure system that’s been stalled off the coast of northeast Maine and a related high-pressure system that has sat over Canada.
