Smallville actor Michael Rosenbaum breaks down one of Lex Luthor's first supervillain moments in the Superman show. 'It was cool to do a scene like that after shooting ten episodes where you’re not really anything bad except the scene in “Hourglass'...'
Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum explains what it was like to shoot an early scene in the series that showed off Lex Luthor's supervillain tendencies. The series, which began airing on The WB in 2001, ran for 10 seasons and 217 episodes, lasting until 2011, at which point the network had been renamed The CW. Starring Tom Welling as Clark Kent, the show follows the boy who would one day become Superman while he grows up and attends high school in a small Kansas town.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY One of the most pivotal early episodes of the series was season 1, episode 11, "Hug." In that episode, Bob Rickman is a businessman with the powers of persuasion who uses his mind control to purchase the Kent farm in order to tear it down and build a pesticide plant, which forces Clark to seek out Rickman's former partner to help bring him down once and for all.
It was cool to have a dark side. It was cool to do a scene like that after shooting ten episodes where you’re not really anything bad except the scene in “Hourglass” where the blood rains from Heaven, but that was just a nuance… It was nice to be a badass, to shoot a machine gun, to have a glimpse into what Lex is capable of… It was cool, man.
It would still be awhile yet before Lex Luthor really embraced his villainous side on Smallville. Over the course of his seven-season run on the series, his friendship with Clark would begin to degrade and sour, turning the pair against one another.
As the podcast goes on, Rosenbaum will be able to track Lex's Smallville arc even closer than any fan has been able to. Hopefully, in future episodes, he will be able to offer even more insight into how this process worked. In addition to having fun playing a villain, he may be able to give a glimpse into the nuanced performance required to bring a character so complicated to life.
