Skiers and snowboarders at Snowbird and AltaSkiArea are being required to remain inside lodges and shelters Friday afternoon after an avalanche slid across State Highway 210 near one of the entries into Snowbird.
The closure was reportedly caused by a naturally triggered avalanche that crossed State Route 210 near one of the Snowbird entries.
Alta spokesperson Andria Huskinson said mid-day interlodges are rare. She said that ski area at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon had received 16 inches of snow in 12 hours as of 3 pm. Friday and was experiencing sudden, gusting winds. She said a naturally triggered avalanche slid into Entry 1 at Snowbird on Friday afternoon and that Town of Alta Marshal Mike Morey gave the interlodge order for that area shortly afterward.
