Garcia: Sinema’s move could hand Senate seat to an extremist Republican
FILE - Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., arrives for a meeting of the Senate Homeland Security Committee at the Capitol in Washington, Aug. 3, 2022. The decision by Sinema to leave the Democratic Party raised the prospect of a tumultuous three-way race in one of the most politically competitive states in the U.S. It set off a scramble among potential Democratic and Republican candidates to assess whether they could win their party’s nomination.
If Sinema really wanted to damage the Democratic Party, however, she could have made her announcement three or four weeks earlier. Sinema could have raised the stakes for the Walker campaign by announcing her departure from the Democratic Party, but she chose not to do that. Instead, she waited until Warnock — a candidate she ardently supported — won his race.
Sinema wants Democrats to back away from the 2024 primary, out of fear that a three-candidate race in the general election would hand the Senate seat to a Republican. It’s a game of chicken that could go seriously awry.
