Back in 2001, when Disney was still the dominant force in the world of animation, DreamWorks brought Shrek, which challenged the conventional image of fairy tales by giving them a twist and adding more humor to them .

Although it’s a children’s book, Shrek! has a dark, more horror-oriented tone, the complete opposite of the comedic tone of the Shrek saga. The Shrek from the book is truly a monster, with green skin, a repugnant appearance, and can shoot fire from his mouth, like a dragon would do. There are moments throughout Shrek! that would fit the horror genre, such as when he ate a peasant’s pheasant and when he knocked out a dragon with his fiery breath.
A Darker Shrek Movie Is A Perfect Tribute The Shrek movies have been more of a satire of fairy tales, especially those made popular by Disney, and though they take their main characters from Steig’s book, they haven’t been loyal to it. The first Shrek movie took its premise from the book, but it’s very different from it, so a fifth movie is a great opportunity to pay tribute to Steig’s work.
