The number of shootings involving officers of the Phoenix Police Department so far this year has exceeded the department's total for all of 2021, according to data analyzed and tracked by The Arizona Republic.
The Republic manages a database of police shootings as they occur and are disclosed by law enforcement agencies across the state. The database, which dates back to 2011, is updated regularly and used for analysis in reporting of police. Bower noted there was an increase in violent crimes in Phoenix, particularly crimes involving guns. Violent crime in Phoenix increased by nearly 3% in the first and second quarters of the year when compared with 2021, "Like many cities around the nation, Phoenix has been seeing an increase in violent crimes and an unprecedented number of violent crimes involving guns," Bower said.
