A sheriff's deputy is dead after an inmate assaulted him, then stole and crashed a jail transport van
The deputy who was attacked, John Durm, was declared dead at the hospital.
Marion County Sheriff Kerry Forestal said Durm had been with the department for decades and his son is in training to work for the sheriff's office. Durm's wife also works for the sheriff's office.There is video of the attack, officials said. "The investigation ... shows clearly this was an intentional act of homicide," Assistant Chief Chris Bailey said.Foley said there is no ongoing threat to the community, and police are not searching for other suspects.
About 12:35 police tweeted that Prospect Street between South Sherman Drive and South Keystone Avenue would be shut down for the"next few hours" as officers investigate.was laid to rest. Smith was killed June 28 after being stuck while putting out stop strips attempting to end a pursuit involving a stolen vehicle. The vehicle slammed into Smith before crashing. Two people were arrested, one facing a murder charge.
