“I’m looking forward to channeling the pioneering spirit and passion of our incredible people to rise to the immense challenges, and grasp the opportunities presented by the energy transition,” Sawan said in a statement. “We will be disciplined and value focused, as we work with our customers and partners to deliver the reliable, affordable and cleaner energy the world needs.”
Jim Krane, energy fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute, said Sawan is an interesting choice not just because of his experience in renewables, but also in overseeing pervious oil divestments. “He’s got a huge amount of social intelligence, a critical prerequisite in an energy system that is fast becoming more complex and politically charged,” said Christyan Malek, global head of energy strategy at JPMorgan Chase, who has known Sawan for years. “He’s going to be able to traverse the various stakeholders.”
