SAN ANTONIO — Jamal Shead’s personality has always made people smile.Shead has emerged on college basketball’s biggest stage, leading the University of Houston to the verge of a second-consecutive Final Four.
Shead’s combination of confidence and comfort has him flourishing on Kelvin Sampson’s squad. It also allowed him to mesh with his teammates in his first year as a starter. Shead’s had an eclectic persona since his days at Manor High School, near Austin. He’s also always been a leader, according to Manor coach Anthony Swain.
That includes a not-so-fond moment after Houston’s loss to Alabama in December. One of Shead’s teammates knocked over a garbage can, sending trash everywhere near the Cougars’ bench.“If that was me, I would want someone to pick it up for me, because I wouldn’t want the world to think that’s just how I act,” Shead said. “I just wanted to make sure that everyone understood that that’s not us.”“It had nothing to do with basketball,” Swain said.
