Shaun Aguano has three more games to make his case for getting the permanent head coaching position at Arizona State and having that interim label lifted.
After this week the Sun Devils have Oregon State at home and then rival Arizona in Tucson, both prime opportunities to make a statement. Oregon State is a program on a good trajectory under coach Jonathan Smith. The Beavers were nationally ranked last week for the first time since 2013.Whether or not a former position coach who has never even served as a coordinator at the college level is a legitimate candidate is up for debate.
Aguano was behind the eight-ball from the start. Once Edwards was dispatched the Sun Devils were faced with the daunting task of three straight nationally ranked opponents and no bye week to help the transition. The first two of those were losses to Utah and USC, although the Sun Devils showed some progress from one game to the next.
While Edwards was always more conservative when it came to issues such as game strategy and personnel, Aguano has been more willing to roll the dice, so to speak. After the Stanford game he decided to take over play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Glenn Thomas. It was a bold move for a coach with so much on his plate already but seems to have paid off.
