Manager Terry Francona loves his job, but says it's wearing him down.
Nothing lasts forever, especially in baseball. But Francona has the perfect job. The front office loves him. Before the start of the season he signed a contract that allowed him to manage as long as he wanted. Or to walk away whenever he wanted.He didn’t make it official on Tuesday. He said he didn’t want it to be about him. He wanted to put the team and organization first.
The front office traded their hottest starting pitcher in Aaron Civale even though they had three veteran starters on the injured list. On the youngest team in the big leagues, they traded veteran hitters Amed Rosario and Josh Bell before the Aug. 1 deadline. And he knew what was coming after those deals -- a young lineup with little or no power, a rotation with Noah Syndergaard and four rookies and a decent, but weary bullpen. Not exactly a roster to dream on.
The Guardians surprised baseball last year by winning 92 games and making a respectable postseason run. They have surprised no one this time around. And the manager has to sit there and try to make the best out of it with one eye on the present and the other on the future.
