New York City agencies will involuntarily hospitalize more mentally ill individuals who refuse treatment.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed, under pressure from constituents to get people off the streets, has also worked to expand involuntary commitments, including aexpanding the use of conservatorship, when a judge appoints a guardian to oversee the daily life of a person deemed unable to care for themselves. Conservators control the medical care, including mental health treatment, of the people they oversee, giving them the legal right to force people into psychiatric wards.
"We are working with state legislators to bring comprehensive reforms to our mental health laws that will allow us to take more assertive action with those who cannot care for themselves, especially those struggling on our streets," Breed's spokesperson Jeff Cretan wrote in an email to SFGATE."We will have more specifics on policies when they are introduced next month."
