This is the third time in five days that the New Jersey region faces a threat of strong thunderstorms with heavy downpours and potentially damaging winds.

The thunderstorm watch — which covers all 21 counties in New Jersey, along with the Lehigh Valley region and Philadelphia metro area in eastern Pennsylvania — was posted at 2:45 p.m.
High temperatures on Friday turned out to be a few degrees lower than what forecasters had expected, with Newark Liberty International Airport and Atlantic City International Airport both reaching 95 degrees and Trenton Mercer Airport getting no higher than 92 degrees. All of those readings were far out of record territory for July 28.
SPC has expanded the slight risk for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening to include the entire area. The best timing is from 3 to 9 PM with the primary threat being damaging wind gusts, though large hail and an isolated tornado can't be ruled out.
