The Wooden Spoon cooks up eco-friendly pastries in Clear Lake
The Wooden Spoon specializes in a wide variety of pastries and breads, including authentically prepared French pastries. The revolving menu includes different types of croissants, scones and muffins in flavors like raspberry and lavender, pies made from homemade jams, loaves of sourdoughs, brioches and ciabattas and honey loaf.
Since being established in early 2020, just weeks before the start of the pandemic, The Wooden Spoon has found its niche at farmers markets in the surrounding Houston area, including regular spots at the Braeswood Farmers Market and East End Farmers Market. More recently, the bakery has been establishing its brand at brick-and-mortar shops, such as the Art of Coffee at its Clear Lake, Kemah and La Marque locations and Pearland Coffee Roasters, with another location in Pasadena is in the works.
Smith and Ahmad are looking at the possibilities of working and selling out of their own storefront, and there are plans to host cooking classes, and create and maintain a community garden while encouraging others to be eco-minded. “The ultimate success for our business would never be about profit,” Smith said. “If we have enough to sustain ourselves, anything after that is nice, but not necessary. We have hopes to also purchase land with the extra profit in the future to place a small shop on and create a community garden where customers can come grab fresh garden products in exchange for pulling a weed or two; everyone helps upkeep the garden and everyone gets to use it. These are the hopes we have for our business.
