“If you come to South, we’ll put you to work designing satellites. Our undergraduate students did it.”

A satellite built by students at the University of South Alabama appeared to get a perfect ride into orbit Thursday night on its way to a layover at the International Space Station.

After the Dragon docks with the International Space Station , the little satellite and other “CubeSats” will stay put in their launcher for a while. In early August, if things stay on schedule, the launcher will be moved to an airlock. An articulated arm on the station will move it into a launch position, and springs will push the satellites out into space to take their appointed orbits.

“It was great seeing everybody again,” he said. “There are students working for aerospace companies in Huntsville, there are four students in the Seattle company working for companies that design satellites … We’ve literally sent our students all over the country because of their experiences with CubeSat.”

JagSat-1′s lifespan won’t be long. It’s a test bed for the new plasma measuring method. If it works, the long-term goal is to design a satellite that can do extensive, sustained measurements, providing “high resolution of that plasma density, just to see what’s there,” Russ said.
