In an era of reboots, Scary Movie Doofy actor Dave Sheridan has dreamed up an idea for a new sequel, but will it ever get made?
The actor who played the character of Doofy in Scary Movie has dreamed up an idea for a new spinoff, but will the movie ever get made? Released in 2000 to a strong reception from audiences, Scary Movie cleverly spoofed the biggest horror franchises of the day with its signature brand of low-brow humor. Making stars out of the likes of Anna Faris and Regina Hall, the film eventually spawned a bevy of sequels that each took aim at different notable horror movies and their well-known tropes.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT One of the most memorable parodies from 2000's Scary Movie was the extended spoofing of 1996's Scream, and the film pulled no punches when it came to picking apart the popular Wes Craven meta-slasher series. The comedy hit also lovingly mocked Scream's iconic twist ending when it was revealed that the oafish Officer Doofy — lampooning Officer Dewey in Scream — had actually been the cunning killer all along.
Describing his potential characters as "a high profile serial killer in a plexiglass holding cell", Sheridan envisions that the film or series would "be like an anthology. They would all be à la carte serial killer shorts." The most obvious parody from the get-go is that of Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, though the rather vague description leaves the door open for a bevy of hilarious spoofs.
Scary Movie Doofy Spinoff Probably Won't Happen Despite Sheridan's enthusiasm about the project, a spinoff about Scary Movie's Doofy is unlikely to happen any time soon. Besides the fact that a gulf of time has passed since Scary Movie was relevant, the character is no longer acceptable to audiences. Though it was all a ruse in the story, Doofy was portrayed as a person with a learning disability, and ableist humor doesn't get laughs anymore.
While there are a host of reasons why Scary Movie 6 is unlikely, including the audience's shifting taste, it is still possible. As horror movies into a headier space with films like Get Out, Midsommar, and Pearl, the opportunity is ripe for the Scary Movie franchise to reinvent itself for a new generation. The original audience has matured, and perhaps a smarter spoof could bring back the series in a stronger way.
