One union says some MRI techs are choosing to leave the public system and work in private clinics, resulting in short\u002Dstaffed situations.
The Ministry of Health told Postmedia earlier this week that some private surgeries are generally 35 or 45 per cent less expensive when compared to the same surgeries done in the public system.
When Surgical Centres Inc.’s contract was renewed in 2020, assessments showed privately delivered day and plastic surgeries were 35 per cent less expensive, according to the ministry. It also found orthopedic day surgeries were 45 per cent less expensive when delivered privately. While Merriman has expressed support for the private delivery model, union leaders representing health workers question whether those savings are real.
“The wait list is just astonishing,” Jalloh said. “If you can’t have enough staff, then what is going to happen? You are manufacturing the backlog.” Tom McIntosh, a professor at the University of Regina with a focus on health policy, said most peer-reviewed evidence shows private delivery is more expensive when there’s a loss of surgical capacity from the public system.Article content
