At the crux of writer/director Kareem Fahmy’s promising but incomplete drama is a father and a daughter, whose relationship is cruelly subject to the seemingly random structures of immigration policy and international border protocols.

Not quite so believable—or dramatically satisfying—is the enigmatic romance between Manon and Bruce. It’s a courtship that seems out of a rom-com, and it dilutes the intensity of the play’s intricate, nuanced examination of a family fractured by a vast, international bureaucracy. Fry is something of a cipher as Manon, sometimes enforcing library rules with uncompromising militance, sometimes bending and breaking them in the name of common decency and basic humanity.
Fahmy has Keriazakos playing teen angst to the hilt; his defensive pouting and angry body language is dialed to 11, with very little subtlety to temper it. Bruce suffers from a similar lack of subtlety, and his actions against Shirin and Peyman seem incongruously vicious—he’s kind and compassionate until he isn’t, and the leap between the two feels arbitrary. has the ingredients to become a rare hybrid of quasi-political thriller and family drama set in a singularly intriguing geographic locale.
