A Richmond man was in county jail after his arrest on suspicion of multiple charges in connection with a fatal weekend collision, authorities said.
According to police, officers responded just after 12:15 a.m. Saturday to Rumrill Boulevard and 19th Street for a report of a hit-and-run collision between a vehicle and a cyclist.
When officers arrived, they found a 68-year-old man in the roadway suffering from severe injuries. Despite officers’ life-saving measures, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not available, pending next-of-kin notification by the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office coroner’s division.
Police detectives began an investigation and used city surveillance cameras to identify a 2011 burgundy Nissan Sentra as a suspect vehicle. By 1:50 p.m. Saturday, special-investigations unit detectives found and detained a 30-year-old man at his Richmond home. Detectives also found the Nissan, which had damage “consistent with being involved in the collision,” and said that there were no other outstanding suspects and neither alcohol nor drugs had been ruled out as collision factors, police said.
The man was booked into Martinez county jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and voluntary manslaughter, and held on $100,000 bail, with no immediately scheduled hearings, according to a county records check Sunday night.
