Authorities say a scammer manipulated a 17-year-old San Jose boy into sharing explicit images, then demanded money to keep them from being released.
SAN JOSE — A man implicated in the sexual extortion of a San Jose teen, which authorities and his family say, was arrested last week and is believed to have committed similar manipulation scams targeting teens online.
Jonathan Kassi, 25, was arrested Thursday in the Los Angeles-area city of Van Nuys, according to San Jose police. He is scheduled to be arraigned in a San Jose courtroom Monday afternoon on two felony charges of extortion and one misdemeanor count of attempted disorderly conduct by posting a photograph or recording without consent.
Their conversation reportedly became intimate, and the two exchanged sexually revealing photos, according to the investigation. That was quickly followed by Last being told that he had to pay the other person $5,000 or else they would reveal his photo publicly. By the following morning, Last had died by suicide. The investigation later found that he had been targeted by a West Africa-based scam, and identified Kassi as a suspect.
