The pandemic offered a rare respite from these conditions, as the magnitude of the moment forced us to act quickly and decisively. We tried on change like a new dance, and with courage, awkwardness and a few missed steps, we eventually found our groove, as these changes resonated to the tune of 70% approval ratings. Yet success hasn’t translated to bold visions or new plans.
Here’s how it could work: Safe would be defined as low volume, low speed and low grade. Most importantly, a street should feel safe. Building on the precedent set during the pandemic, implementation would be incremental, starting with a 6-month trial period for each new street. An easy first step would be to connect existing Slow Streets in a wide loop around Twin Peaks. Then, newly selected streets would radiate outward from this loop, connecting together to create a network.
