San Diego Union-Tribune reporters, photojournalists and editors received dozens of awards from the San Diego Pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for their work in 2022, including the top award for Excellence in Journalism.on Tuesday at Stone Brewing Co. in Liberty Station, the Union-Tribune staff received 42 awards, with an additional 36 awards earned by U-T Community Press staff.

Among the awards, the Union-Tribune was recognized as the best news site and best entertainment site. The newsroom also swept the categories for daily reporting and writing for business, health, multicultural and review/criticism stories. “Awards are nice, but last year more people died in San Diego jails than in any previous year,” she said. “More people died in San Diego jails than on Rikers Island, which has a larger jail population and is the most notorious jail in the country.”Dying Behind Bars“Kelly is the empathetic side of our team,” McDonald said during his introductory remarks. “She has incredible passion for the people we write about and their family members.
