Thousands bring pets, families and friends for annual perambulation, party and fundraiser at NTC Park at Liberty Station

Someone let the dogs out and they were on their best behavior Saturday at the San Diego Humane Society’s 29th annual Walk for Animals.

People and their pets walk during the San Diego Humane Society’s Annual Walk for Animals on Saturday at Liberty Station. “It helps us take care of 45,000 animals in San Diego County every year,” Weitzman said. “This isn’t our biggest fundraiser, but it’s our biggest friend-raiser. We get the entire county here.”

“He makes these really loud pterodactyl noises that everybody says are hilarious,” said Stevenson, who works in a veterinarian’s office. Saturday’s event opened with remarks by dignitaries including San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and state Sen. Toni Atkins, followed by a blessing of the animals.In April the city approved a new 10-year contract with the Humane Society for pet adoptions and sheltering stray animals. The organization handles animal control for 14 of the 18 cities in the county.
