San Diego hospitals prepare for possible increase in migrants from the border as asylum restrictions lift
Hospitals and emergency medical experts across the region are bracing for a possible increase in demand for medical care for migrants as Title 42 border restrictions fall late Thursday.
In a statement, the county health department said its medical authorities are “working with federal and state authorities to monitor the capacity to adequately provide medical screenings to asylum seekers and other migrants.” Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista and Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center have long shared responsibility for receiving non-trauma medical transfers from the border when someone crossing is in urgent need of care.
The main difference, he said, is that those who have not been processed do not have access to local resources provided by nongovernmental organizations, which can help with housing and other needs. A Border Patrol spokesperson declined to comment Wednesday on eight patients, all unprocessed, that Van Gorder said arrived at Scripps Chula Vista in about two hours Tuesday morning.
