With Christmas coming up this weekend, officials representing the Salvation Army in the Aurora area are bracing for a disappointing final collection number for this year’s annual Red Kettle campaign.

Salvation Army Tri-City Resource Development Director Steve Hawkins said Red Kettle donations are down in his area.

“We are at $75,646 as of last Saturday,” Rangel said. “It’s hard to say where things will end up because we really need workers. Although we hired nine or 10 paid workers only one showed up today but we are going to rely on a miracle. The miracle might be the volunteers to come along and support us.”Rangel added that problems with bell ringers have been an issue all season, noting that on any given day, only about half of those hired show up for work.

In the Tri Cities area of St. Charles, Batavia and Geneva, collections this year have been better than in Aurora, but still not great.Resource Development Director Steve Hawkins said the Tri-Cities area will also miss its Red Kettle goal for the first time in years. “A lot of our volunteers, many of them are elderly and they’re just cautious now about going out and being near people still,” Hawkins said. ”It’s also a generational thing – older people are more apt to go out and volunteer whereas as younger people don’t want to volunteer as much anymore. There is a void in terms of recruiting another generation of volunteers.”

Salvation Army Major Corps Officer Joaquin Rangel shows off the classic Red Kettle display last month in Aurora. He said the lack of bell ringers this year is one of the reasons for the disappointing level of donations for the annual Red Kettle campaign.
