Classes are set to resume Monday after a walkout that lasted five days, N.J. Gov. Phil Murphy announced.

“After five days of intensive dialogue and negotiations in my office, I am pleased to share that the Rutgers University and union bargaining committees have come to an agreement,” Murphy said in a statement. “This fair and amicable conclusion respects the interests of many different stakeholders, upholds New Jersey’s values, and puts an end to a standoff that was disruptive to our educators and students alike.
Union leaders did not immediately release the details of the framework. But Rebecca Givan, president of the largest of the three striking unions, Rutgers AAUP-AFT, said there are “unprecedented gains” for graduate students, adjunct professors and other faculty. The tentative deal includes important gains for Rutgers’ adjunct professors, which had been an area of the contract the two sides had battled over for months, union officials said. In addition to higher pay, some adjuncts who had previously had to sign new contracts every semester to teach will now get multi-semester appointments, according to the tentative deal.
