This rural Alabama hospital is getting a 'new life' thanks to a $1 million donation after losing out on COVID relief funds.

stems from the process for doling out federal COVID aid for hospitals, which sustained massive financial losses from the pandemic.

“In their haste to get the money out to fight COVID, they chose a formula to best do that,” Day said. “Unfortunately there were 3 or 4 hospitals that were brand new and had no revenue in 2019.” The hospital expected to receive more than $7 million based on the budgeted numbers created prior to opening. However, they only received $16,000, Day said. Another possible remedy evaporated when language to fix the problem was stripped from a Ukraine relief bill, he said.

Thomasville Regional Medical Center is a 29-bed hospital that serves the community around Clarke County, including the Black Belt. Many residents rely on Medicaid and Medicare for coverage, and those programs typically make lower payments that private insurance. Thomasville had no hospital for 10 years prior to 2020.

Day said the goal was to provide high quality care locally, so residents would not need to drive 100 miles to Mobile or another big city.
