Rockets insider: Alperen Sengun's triple-double a sign of promise amid team struggles
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Alperen Sengun’s pass, delivered between his legs to Jabari Smith Jr. for a pull-up jump shot as Sengun screened a trailing defender, was so casual it almost seemed accidental.He had a career-high 10 assists, which would later be accompanied by 10 points and 10 rebounds.Sengun’s landmark night symbolized promise for a franchise that is struggling to glean positives from another losing season.
When Sengun checked into the game with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, he was aware he needed one rebound and four points to reach the 10-10-10 mark. He achieved it with 5:38 to go, backing down Kings center Domantas Sabonis and spinning for a 3-foot hook shot that brought the Rockets within five points in a game they eventually lost by 20.
“That’s my whole game,” Sengun said. “Always, when I’m getting the ball, I’m looking to my teammates. It’s making me enjoy basketball more when I’m making assists.” Sabonis came one assist short of recording his own triple-double, instead settling for his 18th consecutive double-double with 25 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists. Sabonis was inactive for all three games his teams played against Houston last season, so Wednesday was Sengun’s first opportunity to face him.
