Robbins Mayor Darren Bryant defends property citations as landowners say they are being singled out.
George Vlasis calls a vacant lot he owns in Robbins “picturesque,” with a neatly trimmed lawn fronting mature trees.
Brown, a Robbins resident, owns a lot at 13511 Central Park that was ticketed recently, with a sign on the property.Vlasis said he has owned the at 13617 S. Central Park Ave., for about 20 years, that it isn’t on the market and he has no plans soon to sell it. He also owns other lots in Robbins, including one with a home north of the property the village has ticketed.Both men are scheduled to appear at an administrative hearing July 20 at Robbins Village Hall.
The overgrowth can invite fly dumping as well as “dumping of bodies, the hiding of drugs, the hiding of fleeing criminals, and the welcoming of other criminal activity,” the mayor said. “You can drive all around Robbins — north, south, east and west — and never see a sign posted,” Brown said. Bryant said the citations carry a fine of $500, which is a one-time fee, but if the property owner is found guilty of a violation, the village can come in and clear the property if the owner doesn’t voluntarily clean it up. The property owner would be billed in the form of a lien on the property for any clearing of vegetation, Bryant said.
