Commentary: If we want to bring in more tourists and avert complaints about noise and pollution, let's bring Formula E racing to Grant Park, too.

Perusing comments on popular Chicago accounts was like peeking into a cesspool of negativity that isn’t worth reprinting. Most of that negativity was directed at anticipated impacts on traffic, noise, pollution, political assumptions about NASCAR fandom and anger at the recently defeated Lori Lightfoot. Angry cyclists even rode naked through the city in protest.

“I live in the South Loop and have dreaded it for months. The coverage was great and showed viewers all over the country how beautiful the city is. I will attend in person if it returns.” It goes on and on, and on Reddit, there are no social media administrators deleting negative comments for public relations wheel spin.

It’s clear that NASCAR came to Chicago to woo a new audience, much in the same way Formula 1 expanded from Europe to Miami, Austin, Texas and Las Vegas, with huge success. Austin saw 440,000 attendees for the U.S. Grand Prix, an all-time F1 record. I don’t see F1 ever coming here — a fan can dream! — without enormous capital investment on our part, but, Chicago, it’s time to embrace motor sport as a way to expand our audience.

The Economist wrote a few months ago that Chicago is struggling with its identity, as we try to decide if we are a regional or national city, or a true international city. NASCAR is a regional sport and, as such, brings regional visitors into the city. If you ask residents of Monte Carlo, Monaco, an international city, what defines their city, they’d likely say, “The casino, our harbor and cityscape, and the F1 Grand Prix.
