March 12, 2022 will be a refreshing contrast to March 12, 2020 — the day sporting facilities went dark due to COVID\u002D19.
• We begin today with some 2020 hindsight. Two years ago, March 12 marked the beginning of life without sports. Arenas and other venues went dark afterprompted the NHL, NBA, WHL, SJHL and myriad other sporting organizations to suspend or cancel their seasons. In an instant, we faced a situation that was unprecedented in our lifetimes. Weeks on end of numbing nothingness ensued. Fast forward to March 12, 2022. The pandemic is anything but over, but a semblance of normalcy has been restored.
• And let’s not forget that COVID continues to claim far too many lives. Two years into the pandemic, there is a danger of becoming complacent as masks and restrictions are relaxed or removed. The safety of our friends and loved ones should be paramount. It is a tonic to be able to walk into the Brandt Centre — which was a hermetically sealed WHL East Division hub facility a year ago — but we can all enjoy ourselves without being careless or inconsiderate.
