“Fig Tree’s a highly regarded establishment that's been part of the fabric of San Antonio for 50 years,” said Keith Ludwick, director of operations for Panchevre’s RiverDog LLC, which includes Fig Tree. “Our feeling was that it had never been updated. They were still serving that classic French Continental cuisine that they had been serving for 30, 40, 50 years.”
The Phelps family opened Fig Tree in 1971, offering traditional upscale dishes that included beef Wellington, steaks, duck confit, short rib bourguignon and baked Alaska. A 2017 Express-News review praised the food, but subtracted stars for sloppy service and a stuffy, outdated decor.Fig Tree Restaurant & Cocktails at La Villita on the River Walk in San Antonio is reopening with new ownership Oct. 5 after being closed for two years in the wake of the pandemic.
