For over three years, my wife and I have discussed whetheris a British show or an American show. The indifference on the other side of the Atlantic to “Lasso” suggests it is the latter. But in one formidable way beyond its setting, the show was very, very British.
Perhaps the show returns in some new permutation, but we’ve been led to believe this story ends here. The story of an American college football coach hired to lead an English Premiere League team was always going to deposit Ted Lasso back in Kansas. I feel like the brick road “Lasso” trod was set before any of us watched the pilot. I found myself wondering whether the show changed fundamentally or whether its critics did. Might some have found the show’s vibe lovable one season and bristled at its inherent corniness over time?This observation makes me wonder whether the management of expectations is the fault of a show or the viewers. It’s a shared contract we make with a TV show.
