is plagued by self-doubt. But Leon’s insecurities don’t just simmer inside; they boil over into the lives around him. He’s sour, pouty, and oppressively bad company. From the moment we meet him, he’s grumbling to his friend Felix as they travel to a vacation home on Germany’s Baltic coast. There, he hopes to revise his regrettably named novel,, but every day, minor inconveniences turn into major upheavals to his creative process.
When they arrive, Leon and Felix discover an unexpected guest, Najda , is staying at the house. At first, she’s elusive, but at night, the boys hear her music and sex through the thin walls, fueling Leon’s foul mood because he thinks Nadja will interfere with his work. To be fair, no work gets done in the morning, but it’s primarily thanks to himself. While he scoffs at Felix’s invitation to the beach, he stares blankly at his computer screen or tosses a tennis ball at the wall. He is a pill . .
As Leon’s demeanor becomes more unsavory, he miraculously retains the favor of his companions. It’s a frustrating flaw because Felix and Nadja’s generosity feels inauthentic. Petzold’s cinematic architecture feels built by flimsy plot devices that mindlessly carry flat characters from scene to scene. There are comically timed bike accidents, wild boar, kidney stones, and, let’s not forget, a looming wildfire destroying the countryside.
