A Jean Eustache series at the filmcenter offers a complicated portrait of the late French filmmaker. | ✍️ Dmitry Samarov
These films may not be for everyone, but their fidelity to an unvarnished view of the human animal is hard to deny.
Jean-Pierre Léaud, Bernadette Lafont, and Françoise Lebrun all shine as bright as they ever have in their respective celebrated careers in Eustache’s best known feature,. Described as a love triangle, it is more like three-dimensional chess. The way that the power shifts from scene to scene between Marie, Veronika, and Alexandre is as precise a rendering of the precarity of attraction as I know.
Though younger than New Wave leading lights like Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, Agnès Varda, and François Truffaut, Eustache’s obvious reverence for the history of cinema and ambition to push the medium past narrative convention puts him comfortably in their company. But there’s something about his vision that reminds me of Maurice Pialat, another fellow traveler but not quite a member of the New Wave.
