Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas trained to be a pilot but a change in Air Force policy led to a different career -- and two stars
Dinah Thomas smiles Thursday, June 1, 2023, as she listens to her husband Maj. Gen. Edward Thomas, Jr.’s retirement speech during his retirement ceremony at Joint Base San Antonio – Randolph. Thomas was the commander of the Air Force recruiting service. Also seen is one of Thomas’s sons, Capt. Wyatt E. Thomas, who served as the ceremony’s presiding official.A pilot in training, he was on the verge of earning his wings when the Air Force decided it needed fewer pilots.
As he stepped down, Thomas’s command faced the prospect of not reaching its recruiting goal by Sept. 30, which would mark the first time it has fallen short in three decades. His career path was unusual. Former Air Force chief of staff Gen. David Goldfein calls it exceptional.Standing before about 300 people at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph’s Hangar 5, Thomas saluted one final time as the two-star general heading the Air Force Recruiting Service.
Brig. Gen. Christopher Amrhein was to take over the recruitment command Friday. Headquartered at Randolph, it has more than 2,876 airmen and civilians and just under 1,000 offices across the United States and abroad. If not what he wanted, Thomas was familiar with the landscape, having studied journalism and advertising at A&M and worked as a Temple Daily Telegram business writer before entering pilot training. In May 1994 he came to Kelly AFB in San Antonio as executive officer of the Air Force News Agency. He later was public affairs chief of the 31st Fighter Wing at Aviano Air Base, Italy.
