Restoring trust in our democracy requires us to trust each other first | Opinion
When we exercise institutional trust, we demonstrate faith that those systems we have set up “from the consent of the governed” will work. We need our institutions to be better and worthy of our trust. But that requires being willing to invest in them to make them better, not simply to tear them down.
There is more that connects us than divides us, but we must work at it to keep those divisive forces at bay. How? Here are six ways we can all invest in our nation’s trust. “Trust is the coin of the realm,” former Secretary of State George Shultz said. “When trust was in the room, whatever room … good things happen.”
Fifth, don’t politicize personal relationships: Focus on what’s important! It breaks my heart to hear of families or friendships broken up over politics.
